This event is a fun family event! Handmade medals from South Africa are awarded to the top three runners in each age group. All proceeds go directly to our missions initiatives in Africa for clean water, training, and community health. Past proceeds have helped provide medical supplies, equipment, education, and wells for clean drinking water.
This race is a fast, flat course, and we have some of the best post-race food in town (so we’ve been told). After the main 5K event, a Kid’s Fun Run (the Rocket Dash) will be held. The race begins and ends at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, located in Leawood, Kansas.
This is our 12th year to host this event. We’d love to have you join us!
We will also be collecting gently used or new shoes during Packet Pickup and the morning of the race, to be donated to a local charity.

- During a drought, women in Malawi can spend up to 8 hours a day fetching 40 pounds of water.
- 1,700 children die each year from causes related to unsafe water and sanitation.
- When a community gains access to clean water, child deaths drop in half.

Past support of the Sacred Steps 5K helped the people of Africa by:
- Providing education on neo-natal resuscitation to save the lives of more babies.
- Equipping the Shungu clinic with improved lighting and additional surgical instruments and equipment.
- Educating university students in areas of surgery and medical care. After graduation, most students will return home to provide health care to their communities.
- Providing clean water in communities that suffered from many water-related illnesses due to poor drinking water.
- 2016 race proceeds funded 19 boreholes.
- Each borehole supplies clean water for 500-1000 people in the nearby community.

Volunteers Positions Available:
- 14 Race Course Monitors
- 4-6 Start/Finish Line and Timing Chip Helpers
- 1-2 Kids Rocket Dash (Fun Run) Helpers
- 6-10 Packet Pickup Helpers (on September 22-23) and Registration Assistants (on Race Day)
If you would like to help contact Jill Teale at firstname.lastname@example.org. Most volunteers should plan to arrive no later than 7:00 AM on race day (Saturday, Sept. 23) and stay until the completion of the event (approximately 10:00 AM). Volunteer check-in will be in the Narthex near the registration tables. The run will proceed rain or shine so be prepared for inclement weather. In the event of hazardous conditions, a go/no go decision will be made at 8:00 AM on race day.
Course Monitors: Course monitors will be stationed at each turn/corner along the race route and will assist the participants in staying on the proper race course, course monitors should encourage (cheer) on the runners as well as look for and report any participants in distress or other emergency issues. We will have medical assistance available at the start/finish as well as the mid-point.
Start/Finish Line and Timing Chip Volunteers: Start/Finish Line and Timing Chip helpers will be stationed at the Start/Finish Line located on the south side of the church and will help with organizing the runners into the proper formation to start the run, distribute water as participants finish the race & assist with timing chip removal.
Kids Rocket Dash (Fun Run) Volunteers: Kids Rocket Dash helpers will be stationed at the Start/Finish Line located on the south side of the church and assist with the Kids Rocket Dash to be held immediately following the completion of the 5K run.
Packet Pickup/Registration Volunteers: Packet Pickup/Registration helpers will meet in the Narthex and are needed at various times between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM on Friday (Sept. 22) and then again between 6:30 AM and 8:00 AM on Saturday (Sept. 23) to assist with Race Packet Pickups and Race Day Registrations.
Packet Assembly Volunteers: Packet Assembly helpers will meet at the church on September 2nd at 8:45am and will help assemble the packets given each race participant. Those interested in helping with Race Packet Assembly should sign up on the FaithWork website at least 3 weeks before race day.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does registration end?
Online registration will end Thursday, September 21, at 3:00 pm. Walk-in registrations can occur during packet pickup (check or cash only), and the morning of the race (price increases to $35 day of the event).
What does it cost to register for the race (prior to race day)?
- All timed participants are $30, regardless of age.
- All adults and teens age 15 and over are $30.
- Teens and children age 14 and under, not timed, are $15.
- T-shirts for the Kids Rocket Dash are $10. Kids can participate in the Kids Rocket Dash for free (if no t-shirt is requested).
The price increases to $35 the day of the race (cash and check only).
Is there a registration deadline to be guaranteed a t-shirt?
Yes! You MUST register by September 18th to be guaranteed a t-shirt.
The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?
It is extremely important that the assigned bib matches the registered person’s name, age, and gender. If you need to make a change, please email Jonette prior to the event.
What is the refund policy?
There are no refunds. Any race packets not picked up by 8:00 am the day of the race will be forfeited.
What time should I get there on race day?
The race occurs on the south side of Building A on the Church of the Resurrection Leawood campus, located at 5001 W 137th Street.
The race will start promptly at 8:00 am, so we recommend you arrive by 7:30 so you can park and get lined up for the pre-race activities.
What can/can't I bring to the event?
No pets, please. Children may be in strollers or wagons, but skateboards, rollerblades, wheelies, etc. are not allowed.
The event will happen rain or shine, so please dress for the weather. If there is inclement weather that would endanger people, we will cancel the event in that condition.

- Friday, September 22: 10:00 am – 7:00 pm
- Saturday, September 23: 6:30 am – 8:00 am
What are my parking options?
There is plenty of free parking available at the church. Parking in the lots on the southwest side of Building A will give you easiest access to the start and finish.
